international's
activities in Peru began in 2006. The country’s strong economic
growth rate of 6.6% over the past three years indicates a healthy and
stabile economy. Furthermore, with a population of 24 million and only
7,000 MW in generating capacity, the electricity sector will have to be
expanded as more and more households receive access to electricity.
Currently, only 30% of the population have access to power. The
government plans to electrify 92% of the population by 2015. Peru's strong growth in electricity demand reflects the country’s industrial growth. Peru’s generating capacity of 7,000 MW consists of an even share of thermal and hydro power capacity. Yet, hydropower supplies 80% of the consumed electricity. Electricity consumption is growing at 6%/ yr. So far, Peru's power sector can accommodate the increase in demand. To enable a nation wide electrification, capacity will have to be added. For wind power this may translate into a potential of 900 MW/ yr. Within the sector, the government is encouraging generators to diversify by tapping into gas and oil fuelled power sources as well as alternative, renewable energy sources. Peru considers itself as one of the most attractive countries for the realisation of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects and promises rapid handling of CDM applications. These conditions speak for an orientation towards the use of renewable sources of energy. |
| SoWiTec Peru is
anticipating an increase in generation capacity sourced from renewable
energy. Frameworks are being discussed at this point and SoWiTec Peru
is confident that wind power will find its place. Currently a pipeline
of 5,000MW is being prepared across the country. |
