With 188.6 million inhabitants, Brazil is the most populated country
amongst the South American nations. Concerning energy consumption,
Brazil ranks third on the western hemisphere following the United
States and Canada. As the economy is growing at a healthy 3.7%,
tendency rising, more generating capacity is needed. Currently, Brazil produces 442 TWh with an installed capacity of roughly 90,000 MW. Consumption ranges at 375 TWh of electricity each year. Due to the size of the country and a centralised power supply, transmission losses account for 16% or approximately 70 TWh. Brazil's Energy mix indicates a strong dependency upon large, central hydropower plants. The demand for electricity is growing at 4% - 5% per year which requires some 3,000 MW - 5,000 MW added capacity each year. If only wind power was chosen, this gap would represent a total potential of 7,500 MW - 12,500 MW of wind power per year, calculating at an power factor of 40%. |
| Analysts
project a total wind power potential for Brazil of 143,000 MW, due to
some excellent wind resources found in the North-Eastern provinces.
SoWiTec considers this market as the largest wind power market of the
future. Firmly settled in the market, SoWiTec do Brasil is well set-up to realize its ambitious pipeline of currently some 8,800 MW. The project pipeline consists of the projects located in the most promising areas. |
